What is it in a name? Y
I just thought of something... U noe how sometimes surnames are derived from the occupation your forefathers did? Well, my math lecturer's surname happened to be "Dick"... And I thought to myself "why in the world would anyone wanna name themselves that?!?!" So I was wondering where that came from.
Hmm... You noe how when people call you a "dick" it doesn't mean anything good? It's a derogatory term, usually for a male... Somewhat like a moron.
And you noe how in the past where surnames might come from your occupation and all? Maybe my lecturer's ancestors weren't exactly nice?
Anyway! out of sheer curiosity, I went to google the meaning of the surname "dick". Check it out!
Dick- Scottish and English: from a short form of Richard. Although found in every part of Britain, the form Dick is especially common in Scotland, and it was from there, in the 17th century, that the surname was taken to northern Ireland.
- German and Jewish (Ashkenazic): nickname from Middle High German dic(ke) ‘thick’, ‘strong’, ‘stout’, or in the case of the Jewish name from modern German dick ‘fat’ or Yiddish dik.
- German: topographic name for someone who lived by a thicket or patch of thick undergrowth, from Middle High German dicke, a special use of dic(ke) ‘thick’.
- North German: from a short form of a Germanic personal name Theodicho, formed with theud ‘people’, ‘race’.
Apparently I heard he's from Austria. Hmm... Something cool huh. :)
From the list I gathered... Lets try to fit some of the possiblities in with my lecturer. Hee. :D
Well.. It seems the official language in Austria is German. Maybe! Just maybe there're many "dicks" in Germany! Think so?
And since he's kinda related to germany *shrugs*... Which means we could kinda associate him with - 'thick', 'strong', 'stout'... (since he's not reallie jewish, he can't be fat. but come to think of it! He did put on weight ever since he came to Australia. Haha!)
Or maybe he (or his ancestors) lived by a patch of thick undergrowth! O_o
Or... if he's somewhat related to north german-ish... it could be number 4. Hmm...
Dont' reallie understand how richard = dick? :S
Now I'm thinking why is a penis called dick now...? And like which one came first? The richard dick or the crude dick?
Okay then! Back to mugging! Got heaps of things to do! No idea why I blogged about dick. I guess it's cause I just met him a while ago to ask him for some academic reference so I can get into IH (some super difficult to enter school accomodation - colleges). If I get in, whoa... I can officially stop cooking already! Wohoo! So tiring to cook sia! O_o Ever since I moved to mulwaree... I haven't cooked once. :S
Oh oh, I just finished a test today! It was not bad... Although I didn't reallie noe how to do one part of it. :S Sigh. How depressing. And everyone kept looking at everyone else's papers! Oh gosh. I'm glad I refrained from looking, although it was rather tempting :S (Bleah, anyway my astig kept me from doing so, even if I wanted to. Haha!)
Okay! Yet another quiz and lab report to complete. Gotta run! Ciao everybody!
